Built in the 16th century, Hussain Sagar Lake with a 3 km long dam wall is the largest artificial lake in Asia that connects the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Situated around 3km from the Hyderabad city center,  it was built by Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah in gratitude to Hussain Shah Wali, who had cured him from a disease. The tank, fed by streams originating from the Musi River, supplies water to Hyderabad City. It is here Aurangzeb's forces are said to have encamped during their . of Golconda. 

On the banks of the Hussain Sagar a water front or bund was constructed to control the flow of water on the other side. The Tank Bund, as it is called is a favourite promenade for the city. The lake is used for fish culturing it receives huge amounts of industrial effluent, agricultural waste and town sewage. Today the lake area comprise of parks, temples, statuary etc. 

A major attraction at the Hussain Sagar is the 16 meter high, 350 tonne monolithic Buddha statue on the 'Rock of Gibraltar'. Installed at the center of the lake, the statue is entirely made of white granite. It was erected after years of successive disasters. Inaugurated by Dalai Lama in 1993, the rock can be reached by ferries. Gateways looks like Warangal fort gateways, were erected in 1968 to mark the ends of the road that runs along the dam wall.Qutub Shahi monument stands 1.5 km east of Husain Sagar. 

The Lake is bordered by four major spans of greenery, Indira Park in the east, Sanjeevaiah Park in the north, Lumbini Park in the south and a green belt stretch squeezed in between the Raj Bhavan road and the Necklace Road. The lake is also lined with over 30 statues of famous personalities. Hussain Sagar has other attractions for lovers of water sports. Boating Club and Sailing Club, line the shore and the annual regatta draws a good number of sports lovers from all around the country. There is also parasailing facility available in the Hussain Sagar Lake.

Lumbini Park spread over an area of 4 acres is located adjacent to Hussain Sagar Lake right across the Buddha Statue, at a distance of 3kms from Hyderabad. This amusement park, named after the garden that was the birthplace of Buddha, offers a lot of amusement for all kinds of people.

At the main entrance of the park, there is a large floral clock with brightly colored flowers of different shades. The major highlight of the park is the spectacular musical and dancing fountain and water cascade, provided with colorful lights. Every evening two shows are held at 7.15 p.m. and 8 p.m. The fountain which dance to the tunes of popular numbers from Hindi and Telugu films draws huge crowds. The visitors can also avail and enjoy the boating facilities provided at the nearby Hussain Sagar Lake. There are two pleasure cruisers available for hire. There is also parasailing facility available in the Hussain Sagar Lake. The Lumbini park comes alive in all its splendor at night. It is open on all days from 9.00 A.M. to 9.00 P.M. except Mondays. Another nearby attraction is Sanjeevaiah park lies on the northern side of the Hussain Sagar lake. One of the most prominent garden parks in Hyderabad, it is spread over an area of 99 acres with lush green gardens is named after Dr. Neelam Sanjeev Reddy, the former President of India. It is a favourite destination for young couples and is often nick named as 'Lovers Park'. The park houses a rose garden with a variety of high-breed rose plants of different colours, a rock garden with different shapes and sizes of rocks, and a floral clock.

Yogibear Children’s Park, lying adjacent to Sanjeevaiah park, is an entertainment centre for children and toddlers. It provide variety of playthings like swinging bars, merry-go-rounds, balance bars, slides etc that attract children. It also has a miniature Golf Tract of 19 holes, a snack bar and an event shed for conducting competitions.

Indira Park, named after the former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, is situated in the lower tank bund of Hyderabad. Spread over an area of 76 acres along the Hussain Sagar lake, it is an excellent picnic spot opened in 1978. There is a children's park and a small lake which provide boating facilities. The flora of the park include wild date palms, keuvda plantations, sandalwood trees and also home fruit plants like mango and kala jamun (Indian Blackberry). The computerized musical dancing fountains and waterfalls, a natural living rock sanctuary with unique rock sculptures, a mini toy train for children, a commercial nursery and rose garden are among the added attractions here.

Behind this, on Lower Tank Bund Road, is the 'Snow World' the world’s biggest and India’s 1st snow theme park. Spread over an area of 17,000 square feet, this exciting place displays several wonders made from artificial snow. The snow world has a cryo zone full of attractions from a natural snows cape, with alpine forest, igloos, and simulated figures of penguins and polar bears. To fill the spirit of snow adventure, there are rides like snow slide, ice bumper car and merry go round. Another milestone here is the snow fall produced with pure mineral water. The snow world is open from 9.00A.M to 9.00P.M. The entry fee is Rs 250/- for adults and Rs 200/- for children for one hour. Visitors are allowed in batches with a maximum of 300 people. Children below 2 feet height are not allowed in the snow. The temperature in the snow area is between -50 to 00 C. So special warm clothes, gloves and waterproof shoes will be provided to all the customers to protect them from extreme cold climate inside.

NTR Gardens a leisure and entertainment center adjoining the Hussain Sagar Lake is located near Hussainsagar lake. Sprawling over an area of 36 acres, the garden which houses a memorial to the former Chief Minister Sri. N.T. Rama Rao, provides lots of recreation facilities like toy train, car cafe, Japanese garden essstc. The highlight of NTR garden is the 2000 sq.mts fruit restaurant which is surrounded by three petal shaped pools. It is open from 2.30P.M to 10.00P.M. Rs 15/- for adults and Rs. 10/- for children. Hussain Sagar Lake radiates in the night the reflection of the Shri Venkateswara temple built by the Birlas on a hillock close to the Secretariat.

India’s 3 rd IMAX Theatre 'Prasad’s IMAX' is located on the banks of the Hussain Sagar Lake. Sprawling over an area of 2,35,000 sq.ft, it has an air conditioned facility and one stop recreation hub gives a unique and exciting experience.
