For beach lovers the 82 km coastline of Kannur district of Kerala is a hidden treats and Payyambalam beach is a hot favourite amongst the locals. This is one of the most visited beaches due to its proximity to the town. It is hardly 2 km from the Kannur town.

Payyambalam beach provides the best environment for a relaxed evening and have the possibility for progress as a tourist resort. It is a quiet, secluded beach which often listed in tourism related publications as a beautiful beach. Scenes from Mani Ratnam's famous movie 'Alaipayuthe' were shot at the beach.

It is also known as one of the famous and beautiful beaches in north Kerala. Unlike many other beaches in Kerala, that are crowded and dirty, Payyambalam beach is a very clean and safe beach which makes it an ideal for a picnic with family and friends.

It is a long beach with sparklingly white sands. The setting of this beach is striking with a long winding stretch of high cliffs, imposing boulders and views that extend over the Arabian Sea. Climb up the cliff on the left to get a perfect view of the sea and also the sunset.

Some times there are heavy tides and waves but most of the time one can enjoy swimming in the sea. Eventhough, this beach is a good place to have fun, but weekend, the crowd explodes with locals as well. The best time to visit this beach is at sunset.

The wide beach is perfect for a quiet walk along the cliffs. Simply enjoying the beauty of the sea can be a fun activity in itself. One can find people jogging on the beach road during early morning and evening rest of the day it is peaceful.

The entrance to the beach is through a well laid out garden. A massive sculpture Mother and Child erected by the famous sculptor Kanayi Kunchiraman (famed for his demoness at Malampuzha Dam) which adds to the beauty of the beach.

A part of the garden is specially for children. It is an ideal place for their recreation; there are slides, seasows and other play-ables for them.

There is a also a crematorium nearby the shores of Payyambalam beach where the mortal remains of many renowned citizens are laid to rest here like E. K. Nayanar, Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai, A. K. Gopalan, Pamban Madhavan, Sukumar Azhikode and K. G. Marar.

There are no water sports facilities at Payyambalam beach. Fort St. Angelo, which is separated by a strong sea wall from the sea is only a walking distance from this beach.
