Colva beach lies about 39kms from Panaji, the capital of Goa, and 6 km west of Margao, the administrative headquarters of Salecete Taluka and South Goa district. Although, the beach stretches nearly the entire length of the Salecete taluk, it is broken up into smaller beach sections. Also known as Koleam, its one of the busiest beaches in the South Goa circuit.
The beach has plenty of parking space and entry points, and are always crowded with shacks selling souvenirs and sea food snacks. One can rent mopeds (two wheelers) from this beach. Also very much a fishermen's village, one can see the fishermen busy with boasts, their wives carrying off basketfuls of fish to market while taking a stroll on the Colva Beach. Usually the beach is crowded, especially on weekends, but 100 m apart from either direction can find plenty of space to relax. The beach is equipped with all modern amenities like air-conditioned resort complexes, tourist cottages, discos, bar shacks, seashell artifact stalls, refreshment stalls, eateries and guest houses. Nossa Senhora de Merces (Our Lady of Mercy) Church is situated near this beach. The church has a high baroque interior with plenty of gliding, colour, swirls and swags. The church is famous for Fama of Menino Jesuse (Child Jesus), since the 17th century. It is also famous for its annual festival 'Fama of Menino Jesuse' which is celebrated on the 3rd Monday of October every year. One of the famous feasts in Goa, people from all over Goa throng to this church to pay obeisance to the infant. A big fair is also held on the occasion.
Beach Activities There are plenty of beach activities for tourists at Colva beach, from sunbathing to water sports and nature watch. For speed lovers, water scooter ride, banana boat ride, jet skiing, speed boat rides and motorboat rides is the sport. Parasailing is also favorite beach activity of the visitors. Sunbathing is another popular activity on the beach. The Sunset view is amazing from the beach. Shopping is just minutes from the beach. The main road to Colva has many small square shops with clothing, crafts and jewelry. The shopkeepers are very friendly and bargaining is a part of shopping in Colva beach shops. |
