Famous for its boat races, backwaters and coir industry, Alappuzha, the
Venice of the East is also famous for its beautiful beaches. Among them,
Alappuzha beach is a popular spot for tourists. A desired destination
for travelers, it is located on a thin strip of land, lies between the
Arabian Sea in the west and the and the Punnamada backwaters in the east.
Alappuzha beach is also known as Alleppey beach.
One can enjoy the mesmerizing views of sunrise and sunset.
With its fine white sand and freshwater lakes and few buildings in its
vicinity, the beach is a perfect place for pleasurable beach holidays.
About 5km from Alappuzha railway station, this beach offers ample parking.
There is an open air stage where cultural events are conducted and a walkway
artistically lined with plants and seating arrangements for people to
sit and enjoy the view and the sea breeze. The beach houses a 1,000-ft
long ancient pier locally called as Kadal Palam (Sea Bridge) about137
years old. Built in 1862 by Captain Hugh Crawford, this was used
for loading materials onto the ships when trading thrived decades ago.
Now in a ruined condition, nobody is permitted to enter the bridge.
It also offers a lot of interesting activities for picnics
also. On the southern side of the beach lies the Vijaya park run by the
District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). Constructed for entertainment
purpose of families, this park offers facilities like swimming pool, toy
train and bicycle riding. Timings: Open from 1500 - 2000 hours. Entrance
fee: Rs 5 for adults, children 3 Rs and Free entrance for children below
5 years. Video permit: Rs. 25; Camera permit: Rs. 5. There is another
park known as the sea view park and both these parks have boating facilities.

Visitors to the beach can also see the old lighthouse which was too built
by Captain Hugh Crawford in 1862 located nearby. But entry to the lighthouse
is restricted and it's beams are visible for 25 km out to sea.
Near to this beach, there are ruined Remains of old godowns,
a temple facing the beach, Bishop's house, Indian coffee house and St
Xaviers Chapel at alappuzha beach.
Some of the best water sport facilities are available
on the Alappuzha beach. Swimming under the clear blue sky, boating, surfing
are very popular among tourists. Pedal boats and row boats are available
on hire at the boating center near the pier at alappuzha beach. Boating
charge: Rs. 10 for ten minutes. There is an Ice Cream and Soft drinks
parlour near the boating center.
