  National Parks  

The first National Park in India was set up in 1935 in the foot hills of Himalayas in Uttar Pradesh and was known as Hailey National Park. It is now known as (after the famed wildlife lover) Corbett National Park. In 1970, there were only five National Parks, namely Kanha, Bandavgarh, Shivpuri, Taroba and Corbett. A total of 166 National Parks have been authorized in India. Of the scheduled ones, 96 came into existence and the others are on their  way of establishment.

 
  Marine National Parks  

National parks abounding in marine life, are named Marine National Parks. About 4 National Parks have been termed Marine, of the total National Parks in India which is nearly 100 in number. There are a few Marine Wild life sanctuaries which have not attained National Park status.

 
  Bird Sanctuary  

Some Wildlife Sanctuaries are specifically named Bird Sanctuaries, because of its abundant bird population. Later some of them have been given the National park status. For example Keoladeo National Park was termed as Bharatpur bird sanctuary before it attained the National Park status.

 
  Tiger Reserve  

The Project Tiger was launched in India in 1973-74 as a conservation programme for saving the Indian Tiger Population. Now there are 28 tiger reserves in India. Initially, 9 tiger reserves were established in different States including Manas (Assam), Palamau (Bihar), Similipal (Orissa), Corbett (U.P.), Kanha (M.P.), Melghat (Maharashtra), Bandipur (Karnataka), Ranthambhore (Rajasthan) and Sunderbans (West Bengal), covering an area of about 13,017sq.km-viz
